Philosophy

Conception
We offer an integrated training concept, geared to the athlete’s individual and sports specific circumstances. Our training is based on the neurologic foundation of the particular athlete and therefore as individual as their fingerprint.

Objective
For us, the ability to healthily prepare an athlete for peak performances is the basis of any efficient training. We aim at developing an athlete’s full potential. In doing so, our primary objective is for an athlete to remain injury-free. Only injury-free athletes can produce peak performances and improve themselves. We detect causative structures behind injuries and performance plateaus and subsequently eliminate flaws within the system quickly and efficiently. The primary objective here is to improve the motion basis, in order to create optimal preconditions for an efficient, injury-free and expedient athletics and technique training. Therefore any training with us begins with a detailed anamnesis and an intensive and holistic review of the athlete’s current motion quality’s status quo; this also implies an exact examination of the visual, vestibular and proprioceptive System.

Fundamental Idea
“You are only as strong as your weakest link!” – in its complexity, the human locomotor system is build in a way that everything is interconnected and interacts. A flaw within this system has to be compensated by other structures, decreasing the entire system’s efficiency. If this flaw remains undetected, the long-term injury risk increases and due to compensation structures, existing potential can only be exhausted inefficiently. In some circumstances, the percents that can mean the difference between victory and defeat might be missing and the training objective, whether it be health or peak performance, cannot be met. Mostly, a target technique or strength is planted on a non-functional or hedging system, in order to improve athletes’ performance capabilities or to reintegrate them into their regular training schedules after injuries. In order to achieve optimal results and reduce injury risk, the qualitative domains (such as neuronal reprogramming) have to be developed before the athletic foundation and the sports specific techniques – this is where our work comes into play.

Only perfect training yields perfect results. For that reason, the training quality is central to us. Our intended goal is maximum individual success based on high-quality individual training.

Founder

Through longstanding practical experience, which Coach Lars Lienhard gathered as an athlete and coach, especially in athletics, our philosophy “You are only as strong as your weakest link” developed. From the athletic sports grounds in Rhineland to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The collaboration between Lars Lienhard and Martin Weddemann has been an exciting story of success ever since the establishment of Focus On Performance (2010). With the intention to bring about changes in top-class sports, Focus On Performance has ascended to become the Pioneers of “Neuro-Training” in German top-class sports. Together with their “mentor” and “cooperation partner” Dr. Eric Cobb (Tempe, Arizona, USA), they have set their sight on actively promoting and communicating the “Neuro-Revolution” in German top-class sports.

More artist than coach and an eternal seeker. The quality of his work is in the details, his exceptional eye for motion, his great practical experience, his coaching competence and his pedagogic skillfulness. Lars is responsible for the sports practical and scientific alignment of Focus On Performance. He studied sports science, theoretical medicine and pedagogics at Friedrich-Wilhelm-University in Bonn and completed as Master of Arts (M.A.). Because of his longstanding practical experience in top-class sports, the former competitive athlete is regarded as a recognized expert in the area of athletic training and a pioneer of “Neuro-Athletic-Training” in Germany. Supervising the German national team in Brazil, Lars became world champion as the German Soccer Association’s first-ever “Neuro-Coach” in 2014. Lars prepares for years top athletes from different sports (from professional football to Olympic athletes) to their individual goals and highlights. In summer 2016 Lars is involved in the preparation of athletes for Olympic Games for the third time. Quality and efficiency of movement determine his training. During the past years, Lars has underwent the complete Z-Health training (R-I-S-T-Phase and 9S-Model + Next Evolution) under Dr. Eric Cobb’s supervision and was the first coach to introduce this approach to German top-class sports. In the future, Coach Lars Lienhard will pass on his knowledge to younger, talented coaches, selected by Focus On Performance.

As a young sports student, Martin Weddemann envisioned to pursue new paths in German top-class sports alongside Lars Lienhard, his coach from Bonn college days, and they went on to establish Focus On Performance in the summer of 2010. Martin’s work happens in the background. He is responsible for the strategic alignment of Focus On Performance and primarily concerns himself with management. He strives to continuously develop Focus On Performance and hopes to position and establish it as a constant in top-class sports. His great passion is the active promotion, development and support of gifted sports talents.

Chris Ensminger

As a 17 year European professional basketball player, I have always searched throughout my career for new ideas and areas to improve. W&L Focus On Performance has been a tremendous help increasing the awareness for my body and overall performance since working with Lars the past 2 years. The specific mobility drills, eye exercises, coordination training and dynamic stretches I learned were integrated in my daily training routine as a player.
Currently as a head  basketball coach, I would like to implement these skills and drills in everyday training that I have learned from W&L Focus On Performance. I believe the information I have learned will be used in the years to come and be helpful not only in basketball, but in other athletics.
The opportunity to enhance my knowledge in this area has been and will be beneficial in my everyday life and on the basketball court.

Marion Thees

By chance I stumbled across Focus On Performance during my search for performance optimization. Fortunately. During my last two years of competitive sports I was able to gain a lot of experience. Key to working with Lars and Focus On Performance is functional neurology. The fact alone that a neuron either functions fully or not at all shows how important it is to human movement. In practice, we were able to work on the absence of pain during training, as well as on the sports specific movement optimization at the start and on the track. Through purposeful work with Lars, I was able to resolve constantly recurring muscular problems on the back of my upper leg. Alongside my movement, I was further able to improve my sense of movement through sports specific training both at start and during free sprint. Not least, we have worked on skeleton racing itself. Even on this complex territory, Lars was able to help me harmonize my racing style and therefore broadened my horizon. If I was able to start over, I would love to have Focus On Performance and Lars with me from the get go.

Amir Kabbani

Working together with Focus On Performance and Lars Lienhard enhanced me in many areas. It literally healed me. In March 2014, I fractured my 11th and 12th thoracic vertebra during preparations for a contest. With Lars’s help I made it back onto my bike in less than two months and back to my tricks in three. Since then, I was able to establish an improved sensibility for my body and I am completely convinced of Lars’s approach. I am happy to kick off the new season, knowing that I can rely on Lars’s and FOP’s help at any time.

Frank Rommel

Lars has understood sports’ and movement’s soul, internalized it and lives it every day unlike any other person I have had the pleasure to meet during my sixteen years in competitive sports – this may be the biggest compliment I can pay him as my performance coach. I have worked with Lars since spring 2012 until the end of my career after the 2014 Olympic Games in Sotchi. This intensive period included my third participation at Olympic Games, a World Cup silver medal with the team and an individual fifth place at the 2013 World Cup in St. Moritz, a World Cup victory and four additional podium finishes, the German Championship in 2014 as well as a bronze medal in the last World Cup race of my active career at the local Königssee. Lars is able to immediately pervade a sports completely new to him, such as skeleton, identifying its physical and mental demands and implementing these into precise, sports specific and innovative training topics. With his absolute eye for movement, his years and years of experience and his inexhaustible knowledge base of training methods (he is always up to date with applied training sciences), he frequently sets new impulses, through which we were mutually able to further expand my start phase, my flexibility and even my greatest strength, my driving skills on the track. In skeleton, these require a maximum of body control, coordination, operational precision and speed. Among Lars’s greatest strengths are the diagnosis and removal of inappropriate biomechanical stress, the correction of less-than-ideal movement patterns and recovery optimization in the aftermath of injuries, which are inherent to the sports, especially at high achievement age. Therewith, he enabled me to improve my performance in several races or start in the first place at important races, such as the 2013 World Cup in St. Moritz. There I experienced refractory back troubles in the lumbar region and couldn’t even tie my shoes in the morning, but was ultimately able to contest a successful World Cup under the circumstances. Lars enthralls with his honest, positive manner and his enthusiasm for his work, with which he animated, motivated and carried me away, even when training was tough. Our cooperation had just one flaw – we only met late in my career. I can only wish for other athletes to take advantage of the opportunity to profit from Lars’s skills. Thank you for the awesome time we had, Lars!!

Corinna Martini

I have only known Lars since July 2011, but since then I simply feel well!!! Until then, the start was my greatest problem. My insufficient flexibility and the specific force values within my start phase changed immediately when I began training with Lars!!
His methods and approaches are exceptional and incredibly effective. He was able to project himself into the technically demanding sled start phase and give me crucial tips, through which I improved greatly!! My results are better than ever! I rejoice over a long-term, productive cooperation!!

Alexander Gassner

Christian Friedrich

Shortly after my greatest athletic achievement – winning the silver medal at the 2011 World Cup – followed my greatest athletic setback. Diagnosis, partial avulsion of the quadriceps tendon. Physicians’ first assessment: the end of my career in competitive sports. On the day of this diagnosis, I placed myself in Lars Lienhard’s hands. Today I am able to say that this was the best decision for myself. After long, difficult and intensive work periods, I am one hundred percent stressable, fit as never before and able to train pain free for the first time in years. Through the intensive work with Lars Lienhard I was reintroduced to my body and able to distinctly improve my body control as well as to train my perception. He improved the neuronal components of my movement and reconstructed my movement patterns, enabling me to be stronger and more efficient in the future. With this knowledge, I will be able to perform better on a healthier basis. Therefore, I recommend any athlete, whether injured or seemingly top fit, to work with Lars Lienhard! I will continue to work with Lars, in order to achieve my future goal of competing in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sotchi.

Lisette Thöne

Training with Lars was a whole new experience for me. One gets reintroduced to one’s body and has to unfortunately realize that it still features a lot of weaknesses. In the beginning it is very frustrating to “continuously do something one is not capable of”, but with Lars’s help, his permanent motivation and his dedication, one quickly makes progress. With his training, he managed to gain control over my hip pains that had been present daily for over a year, within six weeks. Now I can give my all at the Bobsleigh World Cup. I have never experienced such a committed coach as him. He renders almost everything possible and cares a lot about every single athlete. Thanks for your help!!!

Yannik Loth

Last year’s summer, shortly before the German Youth Championships, I experienced the greatest setback of my athletic career. During a pole vault training session, I failed at an attempt over 4metres and landed in the pole vault box. The diagnosis was two fractured and two partially fractured thoracic vertebrae. A six months break was to ensue and I couldn’t participate at the youth championships. But thanks to Christian Friedrich I met Lars and directly arranged an appointment. His positive charisma and his boundless will to help me get back on track have deeply impressed me. Through Christian I already knew that Lars was a specialist, but the fact that I was able to embark on light training at my local club, LG Kindelsberg, after a short period of only two months, due to Lars’s intensive training, which was totally attuned to my needs, was more than positive to me. After only four months – in last year’s October – I have already competed in my next 100metres race. Simply an incredible feeling to again run like that.

Since my future focus lies on sprint, I have purposefully prepared for the outdoor season together with Lars and my local coach Helmut Menn. I would have never expected to come in fifth over 100metres, eighth over 200metres and win a bronze medal in the 4x100metres relay at the U20 German Youth Championships. But also the titles over 100metres and 200metres at the Westphalian Championships and as culmination, the participation at the International Youth Gala in Mannheim with a personal best over 200metres (21,93sec), were absolute and unexpected highlights. I continuously increased my personal best over 100metres to 10,84sec by now! Such a fast comeback and super season were only possible through Lars’s support.

I have gotten to know my body in more detail and managed to lose my fear of pole vault once more. At the German All-Around Championships, where I have competed in my most recent decathlon, I jumped my personal best in conclusion. Thank you Lars!

Gustaw Reimer

Beforehand, Lars is a very professional, patient and likeable coach. Back then, I transferred from a very small club to Lars and didn’t even know where my true talents lay, in long distance sprint or rather middle distance. Lars quickly showed me that I would be more successful in long distance and I became vice state champion over 200metres in my first year of training. In the second year of our collaboration I was selected for the state team. Over a period of three training years, I competed twice in final races at the German Championships (4x100metres and 400metres) and stood on the podium at state and West German association level multiple times. Everything went smoothly, the training group was super, we were all highly motivated, things like this seem to be very rare! It was a pleasant time. Good to see that you finally present yourself to the public.

Win Silvester

I have a very interesting, almost unbelievable anecdote on Lars Lienhard. We were both at the Professional World Championships for Latin-American Pair Dance at the Bonn Maritim Hotel. Lars was the only athletic trainer who was officially invited to the pair dance world championships by the late national coach of the German competitive dancing association, Oliver Wessel-Therhorn, to assess the German pairs’ athletics. Prior to the actual competition, Lars identified which pairs would make the intermediate stage and the finals on the basis of the posture of their heads, the alignment of their scapulae and their muscular system. In the end he even predicted the podium positions without any dancing experience or dance specific knowledge. Alongside this special “eye” and his intuition for movement, Lars is able to convey difficult and complex topics in a simple and fun manner. Therefore I like to book him as a consultant for the training of my coaches. He persuades not only with his knowledge and long lasting practical experience, but also with his passion, which he quickly spreads to his seminary participants. With his enthusiasm and his love for sports, he manages to rope in almost everyone and to interest them for complex topics.
